Storing Photos
Jim, over at ChurchTechMatters.com, recently posted about a dilemma he’s having regarding backing up his photos. Here’s what we’re doing, Henderson Hills, to back up our photos and it’s the same process I use to back up photos at home.
- We purchased a Flickr Pro account to store all the photos that are taken for events at the church and paid another $25 for a personal account. I paid the $25 and didn’t blink an eye about it. Here’s why:
- No storage limit,
- No bandwidth limit
- Accessibility to the photos for everyone
- Easy way to find photos you want: tags, sets and collections
- Great way to showcase your photos through the many slide show apps available
- We purchased a 400g hard drive just for photos. (I did the same for my personal photos at home) I back up our “Photos” folder on one of our servers with this drive periodically.
- We still store photos on one of our servers. It’s fast and accessible for everyone.
There are some GREAT applications that are free for Flickr to help you create slide shows on your web site. These apps help to display only the photos that you want shown instead of displaying every single photo that was taken at an event.
Here’s a link to view some of the hundreds of Flickr apps, Mental Axis. Go here to see how the slide show app looks on our church web site: Kids Kamp 2006. Click here to see the app I used for this slide show: Flickr Slide show app.. Don’t let the name scare you away. It’s really a great app that lets you display any photos you desire either by the set or by a tag in your Flickr account.
One thing I would suggest to all. Have a plan for backing up your photos BEFORE you need one! That’s one of those lessons learned!
