C3 Conference (Mac Richard)
Here are my take-aways from Mac Richard, the founding pastor of Lake Hills Church, Austin, TX:
- There is a tension between having community and responsibility in a relationship.
- There is a tension between love and accountability in a relationship.
- Accountability is grown out of love. We can’t institutionalize accountability. (I know that’s right!)
- All good leadership radiates from love and good deeds. (Heb. 10:24)
- How to fire a staff member: (or volunteer, I think the same standards apply)
- Set the bar high - don’t move the bar
- Guard the bar - have ‘hard’ conversations
- If they are not joyful, get rid of them - sour attitudes infect others
- Fire them directly - do it in person, not through someone else or by email
- Dismiss them generally - don’t get caught in all the little debates
- Dismiss them gracefully - What would Jesus do?
- Measure the stuff that matters - focus on the majors not the minors
- Judge their work, are they doing their job?
Mac told a story about one of his children whey they got in trouble. Mac asked her a question, “Do you know what you did was wrong?”. Her response is priceless, “I know I was wrong…I just can’t convince myself.”
I can certainly relate to what she is saying.
