Church “Vibe”
BySeth Godin wrote this morning in his blog about “Business Vibe”. Check it out here: Seth’s blog.
It got me thinking…what’s the “Vibe” when someone comes to church?
- Is it positive or negative?
- Friendly or unfriendly?
- Warm or cold?
- Inviting or closed?
- Exciting or boring?
- Insightful or mundane?
- Caring or insensitive?
- Loving or indifferent?
Great things to think about. I do believe what he says at the end of the post is absolutely true:
“Changing the vibe isn’t always possible, but most of us rarely try. From physical layout to organization to what leaders say and do… it matters. Sometimes, it’s all that matters.”
It shouldn’t be all that matters, but to someone who is a first time guest to your church, first impressions make a HUGE difference.
For more on first impressions be sure and check what I’ve written related to “First Impressions“.

Here’s what I found in most churches in my city as I am in the market for new church.
1. All the best seats are taken - As a guest I’m always forced to sit in the front as a visitor.
2. Most Pastors I talk with before attending can’t recall a defining moment in their life when they accepted Jesus.
3. Most churches expect you to come back and some take it personally when you don’t.
4. The majority of Christians I meet are always saying everything is great even when it sometimes is obviously not great.
When I say most it would be percentage of 7 out of 10 are like this with exactly zero in my middle class neighborhood being good prospects.
