8 Ways To Make A Great First Impression

#2 - Be On Time

Time is crucial.  If you’re five minutes late for a plane, bets are…you’re not making it.  Ask a woman who is pregnant, time gets more and more important to her the closer to the birth time.  Ask her when she’s one week late and time is even more important.  When we purchase tickets to a concert they post the time and we make sure we are there when the show begin.  We don’t want to miss anything.  When you go to a movie…ok that one doesn’t work, but you get what I mean.  Things that are important begin on time.

See if this scenario helps.  You’re visiting a church for the first time.  You arrive at 8:45am, because the sign outside says the service begins at 9:00, and you find these things:

  • No one greets you at the doors.
  • You can’t find where things are located: ie nursery, bathrooms, etc.
  • You find the nursery, but no one is there to meet and receive your children.
  • Since you’ve entered the buildings, no one has said hi or welcomed you.
  • etc.

What do you think their impression is at this point of their visit?  How have we just communicated to this first time guest?

Time is crucial.  The statement, “You have one opportunity to make a first impression” implies time.  We have a few moments to make a first impression.  Someone once said that a person makes a conscious decision to return to a church within the first 10min. of their first visit.  REALLY, time is crucial.  Here are some other areas that we need to consider related to time:

  • How long does it take to enter/exit the church property?
  • How long does it take to find a parking spot?
  • How long does it take to find out where to take my children?
  • How long does it take to check my children into classes?
  • How long does it take till the services begin?
  • Do your services end on time?

If you were going to an interview and you really wanted the job, you’d make sure you were early and ready for the interview.  What would happen if we were early and ready for those coming to our church?  I believe we’d be more likely to make a great first impression.  What do you think?
