Seth’s Blog: Mechanics vs. intent

There are so many ways this also applies to the church. Take a moment and read Seth Godin’s latest post and let’s enter into a discussion.

Mechanics are important, no doubt.

More important by far is creating a desire to share. If people intend to share, they’ll find a way, the mechanics are just a convenience.

Seth’s Blog: Mechanics vs. intent.

I’ve said this was going to happen. I just didn’t know when it would happen. This year, for the first time, we have chosen to not advertise in the newspapers, but have spent the money advertising online and some highly read local magazines.

After three breakout sessions we were ready to wrap up the day with our final session of Day 1 at MinistryCOM ’08. I had met Dawn Nicole Baldwin a couple of years ago at MinistryCOM ’06, Phoenix. She really helped me understand branding in the church environment. Here are my notes from her session.

Dawn Nicole Baldwin – Revolutionary Thinking

What are the world’s perceptions of Christians?  Church?

  • Our tactics must change.
  • Marketing is no longer a one way conversation.

“How do we want to change the relationship we have with this person today?”

  • There must be a point to what we are asking them to do.
  • Funny quote from Dawn – *Bill Gates shake his “money-maker” this just didn’t work for Microsoft.
  • Microsoft pulled $300 million dollar Bill Gates ad campaign.

A Good Example of Marketing

Will It Blend?

  • Create a short funny off the wall video
  • Put it on YouTube
  • Then sell $400 blenders

Change your viewpoint:

  • Coke tried to shut down YouTube ad about Mentos – watch the video
  • Mentos encouraged the ad & experimentation

How can we encourage participation & spread vital marketing?

Application Points:

  1. What changes can we make to change the relationships
  2. Write them down (ideas)
  3. Take action

Dawn did a great job in a very difficult time slot. I really appreciated her use of video, technology, and how we can use them in church communication today to get the greatest message out to those who need it most.
