Person of the Week – Bill Taylor

Posted by: Jeff Wilson | Comments (0)

On Monday I went to a funeral.  Dee Dee, the mother of one of our pastors, had been in a nursing home for a number of years and became critically ill and died last week.

Just over two years ago Bill Taylor felt God leading him to begin a Nursing Home Ministry.  Bill is a financial planner by trade, but that didn’t stop him from doing what God was leading him to do.  He met with one of our pastors, ran the idea by him, and began meeting with nursing homes to see if they were open to the idea of Henderson Hills providing weekly worship services at their nursing home.

Dee Dee, was a resident at Grace Living Center, one of the nursing homes Bill visited.  He was given approval to have the worship services and Dee Dee became a faithful attender immediately.  When Dee Dee died, Kevin her son, asked Bill to conduct the funeral service because he was her pastor.

Not only is Bill the ‘Person of the Week’, he’s also one of my newest heroes!  Bill did an awesome job at the funeral.  He was the perfect person to lead the service for Dee Dee.  He truly was her pastor and it was VERY evident.

He is a great example of someone listening for God’s voice and following His leading.  I’m personally not in favor of human cloning, but if we could clone Bill, I might reconsider.

Person of the Week – 3.7.2007

Sometimes the most overlooked person around you is the one that consistently does his or her job, without whining, quietly ministering, serving, helping, teaching, leading, and learning.  This person is the “Steady-Eddy” that you can ALWAYS count on no matter what the situation.

We have a lot of people on our staff that would fit that description.  But, this week I want to highlight one of them…..

Craig McClain

Craig is our Singles Pastor.  He’s been on staff at Henderson Hills for almost two years.  He came from the business world to join our staff after being a member of HHBC for over 9+ years.  He’s served as a volunteer by leading a small group, being a small group coach, and now he’s leading our Singles Ministry.

He’s consistently proven to be trustworthy.  If you need something done.  He’s your man.  He’s open to trying something new.  He’s ready to tackle any situation.  He wants to grow and learn as much as he can to be the best pastor he can possibly be.  He loves God with all his heart.  He’s a GREAT encourager and a friend.

People that work in this fashion, steady, hardworking, trustworthy, dependable, often go along quietly without getting noticed.  I thank God for Craig and the crucial role he plays on our Church Staff and the Education Team.

Keep it up Craig!  Thanks for all you do!

Person of the Week – 2.25.07

Posted by: Jeff Wilson | Comments (2)

I’m going to try and identify one person that stood out in my life during the past week.  It could be something they said, did, or anything that really got my attention.  It could be someone I know, someone I’ve met, or someone I don’t know at all.  Drumroll please…

Here’s the first “Person of the Week”

Chris Wilson

He is:

  • My youngest son
  • 16yrs. old
  • Single and unattached
  • A great soccer player
  • An “A” student
  • A leader in our church
  • Getting ready to go on a mission trip to Nicaragua
  • Funny, fun loving, cool, laid back, hard working, kind, sensitive, God loving
  • and a great son

Why am I choosing Chris for the “Person of the Week“?  Not because he’s my son.  It’s because of something I saw him do this week.  He didn’t know I saw him do it.  He did it all on his own with no one watching, observing, or even mindful of what he was doing.

Here’s what he did.  Wednesday night our High School Students have their weekly worship service, Chi Alpha.  Most students go to see their friends, hang out, listen to some great music, and hear one of our AWESOME Student Staff share God’s Word.

Most come and focus on their buds, catch up on what’s happening, see what’s new, and so on.  Chris didn’t focus on all that this past Wednesday.  When I went to Chi Alpha, I noticed him sitting by someone I didn’t recognize.  All his friends were up close hanging together, having a great time.  I honestly wondered why he wasn’t with them.

The next night during supper I asked him who the guy was he set by during Chi Alpha.  He said, “It’s a guy that comes each week and sits by himself.  He doesn’t know anyone and I wanted to meet him.  So I set with him and got to know him.”

HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!  How many High School Juniors would do something like that?  How many adults do you know that would do something like that?  Chris, YOU ROCK MY WORLD!!!  When I grow up I want to be just like you, not focused on myself, but others focused.

What would happen if every member of our church, or your church, focused on those that sit alone and tried to reach out to them.  THAT’S WHAT BELIEVERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING!!!  Being a light, being a reflection of Christ to those that are dying and desperate.

Thanks son, you schooled your old man.  I’m really proud of you!
