Got Him!

Ok, this is probably going to freak some of you out, but here goes.  I really like having a nice looking yard.  I also like working in my yard.  Pretty demented aren’t I.  In fact I spent 1.5 hours the other day aerating my yard just to make it look better.  (Chris…does this make me a true [...]

OKC Communications Group

A few months ago Terrell Sanders of MinistryCom came up with a plan to get all the church communicators in the Oklahoma City metro area together.  I thought it was a great idea and jumped on board.
The group has met 4 times I believe so far and had around 10-15 people attend each meeting.  Attendees [...]

Things I Don’t Understand…pt.2

Here’s one that has baffled me since I was a teenager renting my first tuxedo for a prom.
“Why does it cost $39 to rent a car worth $15k or more for a day and $100+ to rent a tuxedo worth $250?”
You should have seen the tux!  Burgundy coat, slacks and bow tie with a cream ruffled shirt [...]

Things I Don’t Understand…

There are a lot of things I don’t understand about what’s happening in today’s world.  Here’s one for today.
We went to Broken Arrow this weekend.  Before we left home (Edmond) we filled up the SUV (don’t even start with me about being green).  Gas was $3.39 per gallon.  Sheeeezzzzzzzz!
We arrived in Broken Arrow and stopped [...]

Firing a Church Staff Member (part 4)

OK…here’s one of my biggest pet peeves.  Sooner or later someone is going to call about the person you fired and ask for a reference.  What ever you do….tell them the truth!
I’ve seen former staff members lie through their teeth about someone just to get them off their staff.  They’d rather lie about the person instead [...]

Firing a Church Staff Member (part 3)

Now that you’ve let the staff member go, you have a few more steps you need to take.   You need to inform the rest of the staff and in some cases the church of the decision.
Not informing the staff and or church will create tension, unrest, fear, anxiety, and erode your leadership influence with them.  This is [...]

Firing a Church Staff Member (part 2)

When I’ve done all I can do to help someone succeed and they still are not doing what is expected, it’s time to let them go.  So…how do you conduct that meeting?  Here’s what I’ve done in the past:

Plan to meet with them at the end of the work day.
Have your documentation with you at [...]

Firing a Church Staff Member (part 1)

Ok…here we go.
So how does a church and or pastor remove a member of the staff?  Well, it’s not an easy and it shouldn’t be.  Steps should be taken over many months making sure you’ve done everything you can to make the situation work.  Others suggest taking time to hire and being quick to fire.  [...]

Tony, Google Likes Oklahoma

It was announced yesterday that Google will be building an 800 acre data farm in Pryor, OK.  Initially the data farm will employ 100 people.  Seems like Google is expanding everywhere across the US choosing small towns to build their farms.
Also yesterday someone else with almost as much influence as Google announced they were coming to [...]
